Appleby Lodge is believed to be Manchester's first Moderne apartment block and was Grade II listed in March 2003.
Designed by Gunton & Gunton in association with Peter Cummings, architect of the Cornerhouse Cinema and Apollo Theatre, the apartments were completed in 1939 and have been home to some of Manchesters most prominent personalities, including Sir John Barbarolli, conductor of the Hallé Orchestra.
Many Art Deco details survive, including the lavish entrance halls, which feature acid-etched glass and terrazzo staircases with steel ballustrades, brass handrails and ribbed glass panels. Each flat has a hardwood veneered front door with brass door furniture and many apartments retain their original features.
